Therapy Through the MultiPlan Network

If your card shows the MultiPlan logo, it is worth a quick call to see how your benefits apply.

In network with most major insurance plans, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna, and a participating provider in the MultiPlan network. Here is what that generally means, how it may affect your cost and how to confirm your own benefits before starting therapy.

What MultiPlan is

MultiPlan is a large provider network that many health plans, employers and benefit administrators use to give their members access to a wider group of providers. Instead of building a network of their own everywhere, some plans rent access to MultiPlan's network.

If your plan works with MultiPlan, your insurance card may show the MultiPlan name or logo, or the logo of one of its network brands. That is often a sign that providers who participate with MultiPlan may be treated as in network, or at a preferred rate, under your plan.

MultiPlan itself is not your insurance company. Your health plan or benefit administrator still decides what is covered, what you owe and how claims are paid.

  • A provider network
  • Used by many plans
  • Not your insurer
  • Benefits vary by plan

What participating means

Participating providers agree to the network's terms and rates for members whose plans use it. For you, that can mean lower out-of-pocket costs than seeing a provider outside any network your plan recognizes.

It does not guarantee coverage. Your plan may still have a deductible, copay or coinsurance, a limit on sessions or specific rules about telehealth. Some plans use MultiPlan only for certain services or only for out-of-network situations. The only way to know for sure is to check with your plan.

Participation in a network does not mean every service or every amount is covered. I do not promise coverage.

How to confirm your benefits

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card. Tell them you are looking for outpatient mental health or behavioral health therapy with a provider who participates in the MultiPlan network, and ask how your plan applies.

Helpful questions include: Does my plan use the MultiPlan network for outpatient behavioral health? Would a MultiPlan participating provider be considered in network for me? What is my deductible, and how much have I met? What will my copay or coinsurance be per session? Are telehealth sessions covered the same way as in-person sessions? Is prior authorization required?

If the representative is unsure what MultiPlan means for your plan, ask them to check how claims from a MultiPlan participating provider are processed. Sometimes a second call or a supervisor can give a clearer answer.

Note the date, the representative's name and a reference number. If anything is unclear, you can bring your questions to our free consultation and we will sort through them together.

If your plan does not use MultiPlan

I am in network with most major insurance plans, so MultiPlan is only one of several ways your benefits may apply. If your plan is not one I participate with, you may be able to use out-of-network benefits, and I provide superbills for possible reimbursement.

Private pay is also an option. If you choose to pay privately, I will go over fees with you before your first session.

Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours' notice are subject to a $100 fee. Insurance plans generally do not cover late cancellations.

Why the practical details matter

Insurance language can be confusing, and it is easy to feel embarrassed about not understanding it. You are not alone in that. Networks, allowed amounts, deductibles and coinsurance are terms most people only learn when they need care. Asking questions is part of being a careful consumer of health care, not a sign that you are doing something wrong.

Money worries can make it harder to start therapy or to keep going once you begin. I would rather you know what to expect before your first session than be surprised later. A short call to confirm your benefits can make the rest of the process simpler.

Once the practical details are settled, our time can go where it belongs: to what brought you to therapy in the first place.

Common Questions

Questions People Ask

How do I know if my plan uses MultiPlan?

Look for the MultiPlan name or logo on your insurance card, then call the member services number on the card to confirm. Your plan can tell you whether a MultiPlan participating provider is treated as in network for you.

Does being a MultiPlan provider mean my sessions are covered?

Not necessarily. MultiPlan participation can lower your costs if your plan uses the network, but your plan still decides coverage, deductibles and copays. Please confirm your benefits directly with your insurer.

Is telehealth covered through MultiPlan?

That depends on your specific plan. Ask your insurer whether telehealth behavioral health sessions are covered the same way as in-person sessions.
