My Approach to Therapy

Practical methods, used with judgment.

Therapy should make sense to you. I explain what we are doing, why it may help and how it connects to your goals.

What To Expect

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy uses real-life situations to examine how thinking influences emotion and action. We identify patterns, test assumptions and practice responses that can change outcomes in personal and professional situations.

How We Work

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing helps resolve ambivalence to change. It is collaborative, respectful and evidence-based for many goals, including substance use, smoking and relationship patterns.

Rather than arguing for change, I help you hear what you already know and decide what you are ready to do.

More about this

I also use DBT skills for emotion regulation and distress tolerance, along with solution-focused questions that keep our work connected to progress.

CBT in Practice

What CBT Looks Like in a Session

We begin by noticing the thought connected to a difficult situation and the emotion or action that follows it. Then we check that thought against the available evidence, looking for assumptions, predictions or conclusions that may not tell the whole story.

Together, we choose a more balanced response that is accurate rather than artificially positive. The final step is practicing that response in real situations so insight can become a useful change in daily life.

Supporting Skills

DBT Skills and Solution-Focused Work

DBT skills can support emotion regulation and distress tolerance when strong feelings make it difficult to pause or think clearly. We may practice ways to stay present, reduce impulsive reactions and move through a difficult moment without making it harder.

Solution-focused questions help us notice what already helps, including useful exceptions, strengths and small changes that are working. Together, these approaches keep therapy grounded in both the immediate moment and practical next steps.
