Long careers end, change and begin again.

A capital city and a working region

Hartford is Connecticut's capital, set on the Connecticut River, with a long history as a center of the insurance industry. Many people across the region have built long careers in insurance, finance, state government, health care or education, often with one employer for many years.

Careers like that give structure and identity. When they change, through a reorganization, a layoff, a new role or retirement, the loss can be larger than people expect. Even a chosen retirement can bring restlessness, low mood or strain at home as routines shift.

These are life transitions, and they are the center of my work.

Distance does not have to be a barrier

I work with adults across Connecticut by secure video. I do not have an office in Hartford, and you do not need to travel. You can join from home in the city or anywhere in the surrounding towns, as long as you are physically in Connecticut, New York or Massachusetts during the session.

For people who have spent years commuting downtown, meeting from home can be a relief.

You need a private space, a reliable connection and a device with a camera and microphone.

When work becomes the whole identity

After many years in one field, it is common for work to become the main answer to the question of who you are. That can make change feel threatening even when it is welcome. People sometimes stay in roles that no longer fit because they cannot picture themselves anywhere else.

Therapy can help separate your values and strengths from the specific job that has carried them. When you can see what you want to keep, such as competence, service, leadership or stability, it becomes easier to imagine new ways to live those values, whether in another role, in volunteer work or in family and community life.

This kind of reflection is useful whether a change is years away or already here.

What we can work on

If you are nearing retirement or have recently retired, we can look at what gave your working life meaning and how to carry some of that forward. If you are mid-career and considering a change, we can weigh the options honestly, including the fear and the hope. If work stress has become constant, we can identify what drives it and what a more sustainable standard would look like.

I draw from CBT to test assumptions that narrow your choices, Motivational Interviewing when part of you wants change and part of you resists it, and solution-focused questions to build on what already works.

I spent many years leading programs in hospital and state behavioral health systems before starting my private practice in 2014, so I understand large organizations and the pressures inside them.
