What To Expect
Relationships reveal our practiced responses
Under stress, people often protect themselves through withdrawal, pursuit, over-explaining or shutting down. These responses may make sense and still create distance.
A familiar disagreement can move quickly. You may anticipate criticism, prepare your defense or agree to something before you have decided what you want. Afterward, you may replay the conversation, question your judgment or feel frustrated that the same pattern happened again. Understanding the sequence can create room for a different response.
We will examine what happens before, during and after difficult interactions.
How We Work
Individual work can shift the system
You cannot control another person's choices, but you can become clearer about your needs, limits and behavior. CBT and DBT skills can support more deliberate responses.
In sessions, we may slow down one interaction and identify the assumptions, emotions and protective responses involved. CBT can help test predictions such as believing that saying no will always lead to rejection. DBT skills can help you stay present when emotion rises. We can then prepare language for a boundary or conversation that is both clear and respectful.
This service is individual therapy. It is not couples or family treatment.
More about this
We can also work through the uncertainty of deciding whether a relationship should change or end.
How We Work
Clarify what belongs to you
Relationship strain can make responsibility feel confusing. You may take on too much, avoid a needed conversation or spend considerable energy trying to predict what someone else will do. Therapy offers a place to separate your choices from another person's reactions.
The work is not about assigning blame. It is about seeing the pattern accurately and deciding how you want to participate in it. We can explore what you need, what you are willing to accept and what action fits your values. If a relationship is changing or ending, we can also make room for grief and uncertainty while you consider what comes next.
The first step is a free consultation. You can describe the relationship concern without having every decision made. I provide individual therapy by secure telehealth to adults located in Connecticut, New York or Massachusetts.
Common Questions
Questions You May Be Asking
Is this couples therapy?
No. This is individual therapy. We focus on your experience, choices, boundaries and responses rather than treating a couple or family together.
Can therapy help if the other person will not change?
You cannot control another person's choices. Individual work can help you understand the pattern, communicate more clearly and make deliberate decisions about your own needs, limits and behavior.
Do I need to know whether I want to stay or leave?
No. Therapy can provide a thoughtful place to work through uncertainty, examine recurring patterns and clarify what matters before you make a larger decision.
